Abstract

An advanced form of bronchial asthma was recorded in six workers employed in the electrolytic aluminium extraction. At first the workers complained of periodic attacks of troublesome respiration at their workplaces only, but later on attacks of the same troublesome respiration, lack of air and a pressure behind the breast-bone appeared when they were outside the workplace. The discomforts declined in number and intensity if the workers stayed absent from the workplace (holidays or sick-leave). Four workers also developed symptoms suggestive of chronic bronchitis. Two workers were found to have an atopic constitution; in the others a varying degree of bronchial hyperreactivity was determined by pharmacodynamic testing.
