Abstract

A study was performed: in a group of 96 patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis with the aim of establishing a possible relationship between the disease and occupation. Seventy-one (73.9 %) patients were heavy manual workers performing their job in poor hygienic and bad ambient conditions and 25 (26.1 %) were office workers. Ankylosing spondylitis in addition to occurring at a much higher rate among physical workers was also noted to have an earlier onset in respect to age in this occupation than in the group of office workers.
