Education for Utopia

Abstract
The contrast between the European tradition of state education and the radical education tradition can be described in simple terms as the contrast between an education that aims to the acceptance of the already existing order and an education that aims to Utopia. Through education, the man acquires a certain profession that will ensure his place in the existing order of thingy and social relations. He also accepts the proclaimed social values and becomes an obedient part of the mechanism of eternal renewal of the existing order. The radical traditions, on the other hand, emphasize the education of a free and creative individual, who will critically question the existing order and will, together with other free individuals, search for Utopia — a community where an individual does not exploit the other. Following a short historical survey of the theoreticians and the practitioners of radical education, there are several ideas about possible reforms of the system of state schools, inspired by the experience of Summerhill and other radical schools.
