Abstract

The authors make an analysis of different methods of collection and processing of data in the investigation of social differentiation. They point out that in general status variables are not sufficient for the measurement of the real position on the status variables and/or the belonging to the status taxon. Because of the characteristics of these variables standard taxonom and factor methods are very often not appropriate to test sociologically relevant models of social differentiation and social stratification.
The authors propose a model for testing social differentiation which measures all status relevant anthropological characteristics and tests hypothesis of the generators of social differentiation using the method of the analysis of covariance structures.
