Abstract

The effect of soot in the presence of ammonia on the behaviour of sulphur dioxide in the air was examined with gaseous mixtures of sulphur dioxide and ammonia in the ratios of 8:1 and 4:1. In experiments 0.2 g soot type N-220 was used which is very effective for removal of sulphur dioxide from the air at air humidity of 76% and at a flow rate of the gaseous mixture of 0.1 dm3 min-1. The presence of ammonia increased the efficacy of soot in removing sulphur dioxide from the air stream. This is explained by assuming the formation of NH4HSO3 or (NH4)2S02 which are unstable at 250 °C and thus facilitate complete thermic desorption of sulphur dioxide.
