Abstract

In an investigation carried out over a six-month period during the years 1977/78 the role of some socio-economic factors in the occurrence and incidence of acute respiratory diseases was estimated. The Incidence of these diseases in the families living in an area polluted with sulphur dioxide and smoke was found to be higher than in a comparatively clean area. The following factors were observed: the smoking habit of the parents, population density, the number of families with children younger than ten years, the size of family, housing conditions and heating. The observed factors were not found to account for 'the higher incidence of acute respiratory diseases in the families living in the area polluted with sulphur dioxide and smoke.
