Abstract

There is a wealth of information within Split’s theater history on its audiences. Alongside attributation which can be addressed to every theater audience, there is a bevy of information in the chronicle of theater events that speak to the specificities of those from Split. Even though it most often favored light pieces of a folk or ambient nature, Split’s theater audiences didn’t perceive theater as a means of folk entertainment. They were open to more modern and demanding pieces, and would express their dissatisfaction when presented with shallow acting and forced theatrical witticisms, as well as being particularly sensitive to having their sensibilities underestimated. Of particular interest for Split’s audiences is the category of curious arrivals, industry professionals, and passers by, which provided their theater life its characteristic colorfulness.
