Abstract

Based on the data from several written media (daily newspapers, websites, and weekly culture magazines), the paper studies the relationship between the contemporary Croatian theatre, theatre audience and theatre criticism. Grounding the analysis in contemporary theatre studies and media theories, the paper examines the position of theatre audience and criticism, leading to the conclusion that much-needed analysis of both topics is still missing. The paper underlines the importance of theatre criticism and theatre audience in contemporary Croatian theatre, but also highlights the influence of media in representations of Croatian theatre, sometimes to such a degree that it occasionally closes the communication channel between theatre production and theatre audience, turning to media genres other than theatre criticism.
