Abstract

The paper analyses the complex relationship between theatre audiences and theatre criticism from the perspective of theatre production: in what ways and how theatre criticism influences theatre audiences today, as well as how and if media image influences audience reception and its theatregoing habits. The analysis focuses on the Drama, Opera and Ballet production of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb in the period of eight years (2005-2013), during which media space for culture and theatre criticism diminished rapidly, amalgamating with worlds of entertainment and spectacle. In light of that, the paper discusses the discourse of theatre criticism, the criteria of critical judgement, and the integrity of theatre critic in Croatian contemporary media space. Furthermore, the paper reveals how negative media image of Croatian theatre, and of the Croatian National Theatre in particular, produced systematically for years, not only by theatre criticism, nevertheless had neither deeper influence on theatre audience nor on its opinions.
