Abstract

The paper is a survey of the literature data, mostly based on laboratory studies, about homogeneous and heterogeneous oxidation of sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere. Homogeneous sulphur dioxide oxidation includes direct photooxidation and oxidation by means of by-products which are formed during ozone-olefin (thermic) reactions and in the course of photochemical oxidation. Heterogeneous sulphur dioxide oxidation which takes place in atmospheric droplets and airborne particles is also discussed.
