Abstract

Epidemiological data on the relationship between mortality due to falls and hip fracture rates and mortality after hip fractures in the republic of Croatia, Yugoslavia are analysed. The data show the rate of deaths from falls to increase with age, especially in women. Deaths from falls due to a moderate trauma, Code E 885-887, nearly correspond to death rates after hip fractures thus indicating the social-medical importance of age related fractures and osteoporosis. A possibility of applying mortality statistics as a parameter in the international evaluation of the incidence of osteoporosis in relation to the environmental factors is also discussed.
