Abstract

On the basis of personal experience with the treatment of 80 cases of acute intoxication by salicylates, digitalis, barbiturates, alcohol, acetic acid and poisonous mushrooms, the author emphasizes the importance of the pH depending renal excretion of toxins. The toxin distribution, their transfer through the cell membranes as well as the influence of ionization on toxin diffusion and their binding to proteins and certain tissue receptors are discussed. The importance of renal, pulmonary and biliary excretion and of some other ways of toxin elimination is pointed out.
