Abstract

As a consequence of the transformation of the town of Pola/Pula into the main port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in the second half of the 19th century, the Fasana/Fažana Channel gained significant strategic importance. Massive military posts were built to represent a strongly fortified defense front. During Italian administration the importance of the fortifications and artillery batteries on and around the Channel was significantly reduced. On the other hand Naval aviation was considerably increased by setting up the new seaplane base in the area of Puntisella/Puntižela, including the port of Valbandon and the island of Cosada.
