Abstract

The author of the article presents a detail illustrating the maritime past of Dalmatia at the time when the Dalmatian cities were under the Venetian rule. It was the time when the Dalmatian communes were obliged to outfit their own galleys that made part of the Venetian naval forces.
The article deals with the outfitting of the galely belonging to the city of Trogir in 1470, in the course of the war between Venice and Turkey (1463-1479). The grand Council of Trogir nominated the Trogir nobleman James Andreis as supercomitus of the galley. With the exception of a few members of the crew, the officers, sailors, archers, and oarsmen were from Trogir and its territory; some of them were hired from other Dalmatian cities.
The sources reveal interesting information about the fittin out the galley, about the salaries of the crew, etc. The data referring to names of persons and places in Trogir, its territory, and Dalmatia at large, are particularly important. Over two hundred oarsmen, archers, and crew in general are covered by those data. Descriptions of all persons on the galley are very interesting: basing on them, we may study also the physical constitution of Dalmatian in the second half of the 15th century.
