Abstract

On an orographically complex, hilly terrain, not even a larger number of ombrographs is sometimes sufficient to accurately measure the spatial distribution of rainfall intensity, due to which weather radars are increasingly used as part of the hydrological analysis in recent times. This paper presents the analysis of the X-band radar reliability in the rainfall intensity assessment in semi-annual series of rainfall events in the Rijeka area. The radar-measured values were compared with the values obtained from two ombrographs, and a new Z-R radar equation was determined. After the implemented calibration, it was determined that the radar made very accurate assessments of the spatial distribution of rainfall intensity in 64% of the recorded cases, although in 14% of the recorded cases the assessments were very poor.
