Abstract

The author updates the issue of the identity of the artist who executed the illumination of 16 pages of the Missale of Bishop Simun Erdödy from the Zagreb Metropolitan library and he presents a series of arguments in support of the thesis that it was done (in those sections of the most beautiful figural composition and in the landscape views) by J. J. Klović. In the introduction he sheds light on the activity of the famocus Budim scriptorium where Klović is known to have been active between 1524 and 1526. He points, moreover, to the historical fact that Klović was in the service of Bishop Erdodv during this period, and that he took part in the Battle of Mohačko Polje in the Bishop's entourage. Deciphering the cryptogram on fol. CXXXII he uncovers the artist's full name and surname, and on the basis of a series of deciphered symbolic signs the supports his claims as to the artist's tedency to compose enigmatic messages about himself as a warrior and his feelings for his threatened homeland.
