Abstract

This review encompasses epidemiological data on asbestos exposure and pleural mesothelioma as a consequence of this exposure. From the tabular survey of literature it ds shown that up to the present time more than 2,600 cases of asbestos and pleural mesothelioma have been recorded. in the world. The data from current literature make clear the fact that this kind of malignancy not only attacks occupationally exposed workers, but also other populations who have no direct occupational contact with asbestos. Non-occupational sources of exposure are grouped according to origin of asbestos into urban, household and neighbourhood exposure (called in this review »communal«, »vicinal« and·»domestical«) and various other sources (e. g. drugs, food etc.). Among the almost innumerable jobs which in present technology give rise to hazardous contact with asbestos are not only listed the commonest but also the most recent with modern methods of application. Examples from literature are reported on many undefined, strange and unsolved asbestos exposures. Some recent views on the mechanism of cancerogenic action of asbestos are given and the importance of their study is pointed out.
