Abstract

This article presents the formation and development of the natural history collection at the Big Royal Grammar School in Osijek from its foundation in 1854 to 1909. Annual school reports have served as the main source of information about the topic.

The main hypothesis proposes a great possibility that the 4 fish specimens which have recently been donated to the Museum of Slavonia in Osijek could belong to the school collection. There is no direct evidence that would
support such a theory. Instead, the hypothesis is explained by the fact that the lists of objects from the school collection were cumulative, in other words, natural history items were listed by groups of objects and less frequently by name or individually. Thus, the donated objects have been associated with the mentioned school collection by comparison with the equally old and preserved natural history objects or teaching aids from the same school whose origin is unquestionable since they were marked accordingly.
