Abstract

Productivity characteristics of young boars of the breeds Big Yorkshire, German, Danish, and Belgian Landrasse breeds were tested applying a performance test in the period from 1986. - 1989. The boars exhibited a high genetic potential for daily gain, efficacy of food intake and thickness of backside bacon. Young boars of Big Yorkshire had the highest daily gain with the lowest food intake (944 g and 2.28 kg), while young boars of Danish Landrasse had the thinnest backside bacon (12.00 mm). A statistically significant connection (r) was established among different production characteristics (x1 - test duration in days, x2 - daily gain in g, x3 - food conversion in kg, x4 - thickness of backside bacon in mm and x5 - daily food intake in kg).
Using the boars with the above average breeding characteristics for breeding improves production of pigs in a herd.
