Abstract

Holstein breed in Croatia is used on the large farms where high milk production is organised. According to the data it can be concluded that the milk production on these farms had continuously a growing trend till 1985 for the annual production and till 1986 for the standard lactation. After that time it appears to have dropped because in 1985 many new farms with lower production were included. On these farms a herd culling rate grew with time. The average age of production cows is about 50 months. Genetic improvements are based primanly on the selection of the best sires and dams which will be used intensively on the population, after they have positive progeny test.
