Abstract

In growing most vegetable species from seedlings there appears a problem of determining optimal seedling age and substrate volume around the root which will ensure the production of high – quality seedlings, as well as their successful development after planting (uniform growth and higher yield). The aim of this paper was to determine optimal substrate volume and seedling age on cabbage yield in summer- fall growing season in 2010. A two factorial field trial was set by the method of randomized block design in four replications. Two seedling ages were tested (4 and 7 weeks) and two substrate volumes (20, 25 and 32 cm3) produced in containers with 104, 160 and 204 sowing spots. The tested parameters did not affect weight, height, diameter and average marketable yield of cabbage heads. Based on research results, the combination of younger seedlings (4 weeks) and the lowest substrate volume (20 cm3) can be recommended as optimal for the production of cabbage seedlings. The mentioned combination is appropriate for seedling producers because by increasing both substrate volume and seedling age, expenses per produced seedling increase too. Also, it is appropriate for cabbage producers because in case of postponed planting due to unfavorable weather conditions, aging of seedlings up to 7 weeks will not affect negatively the components of cabbage yield.
