Abstract

Families, property and inheritance practices are the subject of diff erent scientifi c disciplines, and in my doctoral thesis I problematized their interrelationship. In the thesis this phenomena’s are analyzed within a specifi c socio-historical context and thus I aimed to point to the eff ect of economic, political and social conditions within the study area. The thesis covers the period from the late 19th to the late 20th century, and the major area of research includes the rural area of Bjelovarregion. With the help of archival documents, ethnographic material, and the literature mentioned phenomena will be analyzed in their changes and continuity. Among other things the doctoral thesis points to the existence of diff erent functions and meanings of property (social, economic, symbolic and cultural) and focuses on the values and practices relating to property and its transmission. Analysis and interpretation of sources showed that the structure of the family, its transformation and the issue of inter-generational relationships directly associated with certain means of property transmission.
