Abstract
The basic prerequisite for economical and profitable pig breeding is a satisfactory degree of pig fertility. However, both in this country and aboard, pig fertility is increasing ever more slowly or stagnating or even decreasing. To enhance pig fertility, several methods in breeding and selection as well as in the health protection of breeding pigs are employed. In the article breeding and selection methods, i.e. genetic aspects of the improvement of fertility characteristics (pure breeds, application of BLUP and other methods, test for elimination of stress-sensitive pigs, cross-breeding, etc) are discussed. In spite of a low degree of heritability and an ever smaller variability of fertility traits, genetic advances are possible by conventional methods for breeding and selection.
