Abstract

Every year strawberry selectors give us more and more new sorts valuable in economic terms. The selection of strawberries is very active in California, Italy, France, Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic, and it is directed not only to the production of new sorts that are rich in fruits and give superb quality, but also to the resistance to illnesses and pest, and to the conditions of production space, which include relation to the photo period and also resistance to coldness and dryness. In horticulture the sorts of strawberries are rapidly changed, since old sorts give way to new selections. What we want to emphasize here is that the sort of strawberriws in terms of photoperiod can be devided into short-day sorts, long-day sorts and sorts indifferent to the duration of the day, i.e. of the lighting. Then, sorts can be divided into those that throughout a year bear fruits only once, and those that give fruits more times a year - from May to autumn; and creeping strawberries, that are relatively insignificant. When it comes to the time of ripening, strawberries can be divided into: very early, early, medium early and late sorts. In the growing of strawberries a large number of sorts has been spread. Sort lists for strawberries are often altered. The sorts that are most common in growing are the following: Addie, Adria, Alba, Aromas, Bisalta, Darselect, Demetra, Elsanta, Gorella, Iddea, Marmolada, Maya, Miss, Onda, Pajaro, Paros, Patty, Queen Elisa, Raurica, Rubea, Roxana, Seascape, Tethis and Tudla.
Here we are presenting, for the first time in Croatia, the description of the latest strawberry sorts, that have been subject to testings in fruit institutes in Italy, and the results of that study were published in 2003.
Those are the sorts: Adria, Aromas, Bisalta, Darselect, Demetra, Maya, Patty, Rubea, Rubea, Roxana and Seascape. Of all the sorts described in this article only Aromas, Bisalta and Seascape bear fruit more times a year. All the others bear fruit only once a year.
