The importance of fertilization in strawberry growing

Abstract
Strawberries are a very intensive agricultural sort that is very profitable for the producers. According to the data provided by the Croatian institute for agricultural advisory service, in its publication The Catalogue of calculations (2001), with 1 ha of intensive strawberry growing it is possible to obtain profit of 80.989,96 kn. It is certain that such an intensive and profitable culture is very demanding from the point of view of technology. Surely, a very important technological intervention in the growing is the appropriate fertilization, from the aspect of choice of fertilizer but also from the aspect of duration and quantity of application. By non-adequate fertilization, the quality of fruits can be significantly diminished; different sizes and coloration of fruits, lack of sugar in fruits, sensitivity to transportation and long-term storage can certainly lead to a lower price of fruits and profit less than expected.
In this article we present problems of application of fertilizers in strawberry growing, as well as the possible solutions to these problems, so that the strawberry producers might apply the appropriate technology and obtain the profit they expected.
Fertilization represents an important technological intervention in strawberry growing, that greatly affects the height and quality of crops. Since according to the expert assessment, the value of fertilization presents only 8 % of the total costs, by investing more in fertilization we can expect a significantly higher profit in production. The purpose of this article is to describe the importance of fertilization in strawberry production and the formation of a frame that would enable further expert and scientific research on this technological part of production.
