Abstract

Domestic goats are blamed for much of the destruction of the Mediterranean forests, so their free breading is regulated by law. According to the authors' opinion the generally mismanagement of goats, rather than their mere presence resulted in damage to Mediterranean Karst forests in the past. Now, with better information available concerning the role of goats in Mediterranean ecosystems, it is possible to maintain and increase their important role in the development of the our Mediterranean areas without causing significant damage to the forest vegetation. Moreover, the authors argue, the presence of goats in the Mediterranean pasture and forest communities can bring mutual benefits. Achieving this will require the foresters to work in harmony with range managers and goat shepherds rational utilization of the present forage resources, and at the same time protect the plant cover from furher degradation.
