Abstract

Cholinesterase activity was measured in the whole blood of agricultural workers occupationally exposed to organophosphorus pesticides. The highest cholinesterase activities were recorded in wine-growers, less high in male florists and still less in fruiterers. The lowest enzyme activities were observed in female florists. Cholinesterase activities recorded in two measurements showed significant differences in wine-growers and in agricultural workers aged 35-45 years. In 18 workers, out of 49 examined, cholinesterase activity in the whole blood was lowered by 10-40 percent but no clinical symptoms of poisoning by organophosphorus compounds were noticed.
