Abstract

The data on chemical eye burns of in-patients treated at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Hospital have been analyzed for the period of 21 years. Out of 1044 cases 480/o were due to calcium hydroxide. The data included considerably more males than females, the ratio being higher than 5 : 1. The hospital treatment was the longest in patients suffering from alkali burns - 23.3 days on an average. In spite of an intensive medical and/or surgical treatment, total unilateral or bilateral sight loss occurred in 73 patients and a partial Ioss of sight occurred in 367 patients.
