Abstract

In a clinical-epidemiological study performed in 1969 and 1972 3265 subjects aged 38-57 years were examined. At both examinations varicose veins of the lower leg were found in 7.1% males and in 21% females. In about 1.5% males and 3% females the form of varices was very severe. The disease was most frequent in farmers and unskilled workers. The occurrence of varices is discussed in relation to anthropological and regional characteristics, living habits as well as in relation to other chronic diseases in the same subjects.
