Abstract

Hyperacute and acute poisoning with carbon disulphide (CS2), which is particularly rare nowadays and happens only accidentally, is reported. A very high concentration of CS2 vapours (over 3000 mg/m3 air) under pressure caused instantaneous death of the worker who was struck by the flow of polluted air. The worker who was standing close by suffered an extreme irritability of the brain, irregular breathing and coma. The obduction findings were: cyanosis universalis, oedema cerebri, emphysema vesiculare acutum et oedema pulmonum, tonsillitis follicularis. The worker who survived had normal standard laboratory findings of blood and urine, normal hepatogram and proteinogram, while ECG showed changes in the form of negative and flattened T wave which quickly became normal. Iodine-azide test in the accident, showed instantaneous decolorization. After ten days of hospital treatment subjective psychic disturbances disappeared. A symptomatic therapy (sedatives and glucose-vitamin infusion) was applied as no antidotes exist.
