Abstract

Twelve cases of nitrogen cyanide poisoning in a ferrosilicium and ferromanganese briquetting works are described. The poisoning happened in such conditions of the technological process in which the occurrence of nitrogen cyanide could not have been expected. Symptoms of poisoning indicated a possible existence of nitrogen cyanide in the working atmosphere. Nitrogen cyanide poisoning was a consequence of unfavourable factors in the process of production and pointed to a possible presence of nitrogen cyanide in the technological process of ferrosilicium briqueting which had not been known before. The authors emphasize the need for thorough knowledge of the technological process, and point out that a cooperation of technologists and occupational health experts as well as a follow-up of working conditions and workers' morbidity are essential. Team investigations of possible harmful noxae in the working atmosphere, particularly when new substances are introduced into the technological process are recommended.
