Abstract

Methodological problems in the determination of lead in hair are presented. The importance of correct sampling of hair according to its length and of the way of preparation of samples is emphasized. Normal values of lead concentrations in hair as found in literature as well as the values of increased lead absorption and lead poisoning in adults and children are reported. In conclusion the authors suggest the introduction of a standard method for the determination of lead concentrations in hair which will enable a comparison of results from different studies and will thus become a valuable indicator in the determination of lead absorption.
