Abstract

This article examines the role of the nobility as the most important component of Ragusan credit trade in the Balkans during the so-called ‘Golden Age’— between 1520 and 1623. The problem has been analysed on several levels, starting with overall credit activity of the nobility by trade colonies in the interior. Also provided is a survey of the nobles whose investments in credit trade exceeded the amount of 5,000 ducats, and lastly, of those who invested more than 20,000 ducats (48 in all). Nine of the greatest creditors from the patricians ranks participated with 16 per cent, and only three members of the Gučetić and three members of the Bobaljević noble family with 11 per cent of the overall Ragusan credit trade.
