Abstract

The problem of environmental contamination with cadmium has been receiving increasing attention lately, especially since it was established that the contamination of food and waiter with this toxic metal is vitally important in the development of the itai itaii. disease. The awareness of the danger of excessive accumulation of cadmium in the human body has incited a fast development of ecological, experimental, clinical and epidemiological studies. Under the auspices of the World Health Organization an international scientific programme of fight has been designed against uncontrolled increase in environmental pollution with cadmium and against fur reaching consequences of its toxic effects on human health in general. The present paper deals with the latest knowledge about environmental contamination with cadmium and the results of experimental, clinical and epidemiological studies. The recommendations of the World Health Organization are discussed with particular reference to the current circumstances in Yugoslavia.
