Abstract

Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb continued systematic archaeological excavations in August 2015, which have been carried out since 1997 in Galovo, northeast part of Slavonski Brod. This year, the research of the south section continued, focusing on the ritual-burial ground on the east side, also explored in 2014. A large work dugout was discovered (SU3316/3317), approximately 10 meters from the grave pit eastward. In the north part of the dugout, two pottery furnaces were found, one larger, the other one smaller, while a spherical furnace for ash production was found in the south section, with a ditch not far away containing the remains of wooden beams and clay loom weights. There are numerous fragments of pots, bowls and footed bowls, with rough or smooth finish. Special finds include: parts of a sacrificial table, corners of two altars with the foot, three different altar feet (one foot is zoomorphic), a clay bead, two parts of a figure’s arm, protome from an altar (head of a boar), part of a disc with a hole and several loom weights. In terms of stone products, various tools were found, blades, arrows, shards, pieces of whetstone, core, parts of grindstone, grinder and several stone axes. In the work dugout, smaller quantities of animal bones were also found. The archaeological material is attributed to Starčevo culture Linear A. The discovery of a work dugout on the southeast section of the ritual-burial ground could suggest a delineation towards the settlement on that side.
