Abstract

In October 2015 the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb in collaboration with Centre national de la recherche scientifique and Université Paris-Est started archaeological investigation at Bunje site on the Island of Brač.
The research aimed to establish the site extent and the condition of walls. The site occupies an area of around 3,700 m2. If we include the lokva (karst pond) as part of the villa it could have mesured 10,000 m2.
The site is overgrown by lush vegetation, shrubs and forest, which endangeres the architecture that is still in place. Vegetation was cleared from visible structures which were documented and protected.
Most notable finds include fine pottery fragments, an amphora of African production, attributed from early 2nd to early 6th c., Late Roman amphoras 1 and 2, attributed to 5th-7th c., tiles with PANSIANA seal which were distributed across the Adriatic since 1st c. BC until Emperor Vespasian.
A large number of tesserae was also found, most densely present in Sector 10 where they were found in situ as the surface of the cistern.
Also, there are sarcophagi which could be attributed to late 5th c., which illustrates a long history of occupation at this site.
