Abstract
A change in the quality of a water course is due to meteorological and hydrological parameters and to pollution which is caused by man and his activities. Seventeen parameters can have an appreciable effect on self-purification. However, by choosing favourable conditions 13 parameters can be eliminated. The basic principles to the approach of self-purification are: 1. changes of the total amount of water up all hydrological processes, 2. changes in the amount of oxygen up all physico-chemical and biological processes, 3. all changes of mass ought to be followed in space and time. Determination of the average sector current speed of a particular volume of water is a basis for the synchronization of water sampling. The analysis of self-purification is performed on the basis of a diagram of analytical determinants and a mathematical interpretation of the oxygen curve according to Streeter and Phelps. As an example, the results of measurements of the current self-purification of the Sava river from Brežlce to Sisak are shown. They show the strong influence that water current turbulence has on self-purification.
