Abstract
In evaluating the biological effects of manganese and the level of exposure possibly harmful to health respiratory impairment stands out as an interesting problem. The preliminary results of epidemiological studies parallely carried out in groups of workers and school children working or living in various exposures to manganese are presented. The prevalence of respiratory symptoms in workers occupationally exposed to manganese was compared with that of two other groups of workers exposed to different manganese concentrations in the outer atmosphere. The occupationally exposed groups showed a higher rate of symptoms particularly if compared with the group of workers exposed to low concentration of manganese. In the evaluation of the results some other relevant factors such as smoking habit were also considered. A separate study conducted in school children (boys and girls) of standardized age showed, with only one exception, no relationship between FEV0.75 values and manganese concentrations in the air measured in the vicinity of the school. The measurements were performed at the beginning and at the end of a six month period (November 1972 - April 1973) in which the incidence of respiratory diseases was followed both in the children and their families.
