Abstract

The value of stabilizers (5% glycerol, 0.2% n-butanol, and 0.5% acacia) added to 0.01 M sodium hydroxide for the collection and storage of samples in the determination of sulphur dioxide in the air was examined. The examination of the collection efficiency with realistic air samples yielded poor results. With mixtures of sulphur dioxide and air prepared in laboratory a good efficiency was obtained. If however, nitrogen dioxide - which is practically always present in the atmosphere - was added to the gaseous mixture, the efficiency of the method was found poor. Stabilizers can protect sulphur dioxide from oxidation with the oxygen from the air, but not from oxidation with nitrogen dioxide simultaneously present in the atmosphere. Therefore, methods using this type of absorption medium cannot be recommended.
