Abstract
The paper explores the possibility for a connection between Rijeka and Trieste by rail, which would at the same time directly connect Istrian railway lines with the rest of the Croatian lines. The construction of a new line would have a major influence on completing the Mediterranean corridor in the territory of Slovenia and Croatia. Besides its local and regional role, the new railway line would play an important part in international transport as well. The paper especially stresses the need for establishing a multimodal corridor between the northern Adriatic ports of Trieste, Koper and Rijeka with the Danube River and the Black Sea. It is not possible to establish this corridor without constructing a new Rijeka –Trieste railway line.
