Abstract

The systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured in a recumbent position in 3470 males and 599 females aged 15-60. The systolic blood pressure values in males varied from 90 to 215 mm Hg. The arithmetic mean was 136 mm Hg and S. D. was 17 mm Hg. The arithmetic mean of the diastolic pressure was 85 mm Hg, S. D. 12 mm Hg and the pressure from 45 to 135 mm Hg. In females the arithmetic mean of the systolic pressure was 133 and S. D. 15 mm Hg. The pressure varied from 95 to 205 mm Hg. The diastolic pressure ranged from 45 to 114 mm Hg with the arithmetic mean of 81 and S. D. 11 mm Hg. In males systolic and diastolic blood pressures were analyzed in relation to age, height, weight, subscapular skin fold thickness and abdominal circumference. A multiple correlation between the systolic pressure on one side and age and subscapular skin fold thickness on the other was 0.34. The same correlation for the diastolic pressure was 0.33. It was found that the arterial systolic pressure was significantly higher in smokers. The measured blood pressure values are given in tables, by five-year age groups, showing whether the systolic or diastolic pressure was reduced, borderline, below average, average, beyond average or elevated. In addition, the equation for the line of multiple regression was calculated to be used for the calculation of the mean pressure in relation to age and weight. The calculated values are presented graphically.
