Abstract
Wireworms, along with the western corn rootworm, are the most damaging pests of corn seeds and roots, thus reducing the crop density, product quality and yield. The control of wireworms can be done only preventively, based on the results of soil examination or monitoring of adults with sexual pheromones. Due to many limitations, the number of permitted insecticides is decreasing. It is therefore necessary to explore the possibilities for controlling wireworms, including non-pesticidal measures and the rational application of acceptable active ingredients. The results of European and Canadian researchers suggest that sowing the trap crops along the main crop reduces pest attack and increases the yield. The aim of this study was to determine whether there are differences in crop density and yield between the corn sown as main crop and corn sown along with trap crops (wheat and peas). The field experiment consisted of two parts: one part of the plot was sown with corn and trap crops, and on the other part of the experiment only corn was sown. The field experiment consisted of three treatments with insecticidal seed treatments and non-treated control. According to the results of the first year of research, we can conclude that sowing trap crops positively affects the crop density and corn yield, which enhances the production of corn in an environmentally acceptable manner.
