Abstract
Stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis) is one of the most important diseases of wheat worldwide that can reduce yields by 80 %. In area where during winter temperatures are often in the range of 3° to 12°C, with enough moisture, stripe rust is very early in the developing crops. Spring disease development is most rapid between 10° and 15°C with intermittent rain or dew. These conditions are in Medjimurje recorded from the beginning of November 2013 until mid-May 2014. The first symptoms of stripe rust we noticed on local cultivars of winter wheat in late March, and already four weeks later unprotected and susceptible crops were heavily infected. The chemical protection measures are most effective against stripe rust with following fungicides: azoxystrobin & propiconazole (Amistar Extra), cyproconazole & trifloxystrobin (Sphere), cyproconazole & propiconazole (Artea), epoxyconazole & thiophanate- methyl (Duett Ultra) and tebuconazole & prothioconazole (Prosaro). Application should begin as early as mid- March and repeated in April and May 2014. Yields of wheat due stripe rust in unprotected areas were reduced by 60 %.
