Abstract

Phytophthora fragariae and P. cactorum are among the most destructive pathogens in strawberry production. These are fungus - like organisms that attack the underground parts of the plant, causing wilting and drying of strawberries. The damage caused can be drastic. Unlike P. fragariae, which has never been recorded, P. cactorum often causes deterioration of strawberry plantations in Croatia. The paper describes the etiology and symptoms of diseases and basic morphological characteristics, focusing on differences among parasites. Potential indirect and direct control measures are discussed.
