Abstract

The essential conditions for efficient collection of representative air samples are discussed. The advantage of personal air samplers for the assessment of workers' exposure is pointed out. Using as example the determination of lead in air in parallel samples collected by identical personal and stationary samplers, the questionable value of stationary samples is demonstrated. Stationary samples yield different values from those of parallel personal samples. To enable a wider application of personal samplers it is necessary to revise the threshold limit values on the basis of the relationship between the exposure levels as measured with personal samplers and biological effects.
