Abstract

Synthetic pyrethroids are derived compounds similar in structure and activity as a natural insecticide pyrethrin. According to the mode of action they are nerve poisons acting on the transmission of nerve impulses in a way to induce responses of pumps of sodium and potassium ions during depolarization phase. Their primary site of action are the sodium channels which leads to a rapid "knockdown" effect. They have contact and stomach activity, broad spectrum of application and are used in small doses which reduces the risk of environmental pollution. This paper presents the most important environmental and toxicological properties of active ingredients from the group of pyrethroids, which are allowed in Croatia.
