Abstract
Potato cyst nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and Globodera pallida (PCN) have proved to be phytoquarantine and major economic pest species of potato in Medimurska and Vara2dinska County. Since 2001, when G. rostochiensis was discovered in the locality of Belica (Medimurska County) for the first time, there has been conducted monitoring of the widespread of PCN in Croatia. Species G. rostochiensis was discovered in four counties: Medimurska, Varazdinska, Zagrebacka and Primorsko-goranska and G. pallida in two counties: Medimurska and Vara2dinska. In infected areas a significant potato yield loss was evidented. In order to prevent the build-up of infestation and damages, integrated management strategies, neglected until 2001, have been implemented. This strategy will replace the previous practices of monoculture, the use of short rotations and growing susceptible cultivars by use of longer crop rotation, growing of resistant cultivars and application of nematicides, if necessary.
