Abstract

Tuta absoluta is a dangerous pest of tomato, not only in the greenhouse production, but also in the field, and can cause up to 100 % damage if the population is not controlled. The pest spreads rapidly through Europe since it was first recorded in 2006 in Spain. In Croatia it was first recorded in 2009 in Turanj (Biograd na Mom) (Gotlin Culjak i sur., 2010) and since then it's spreading rapidly. The population of T.absoluta on OPG Jurkovic in Istrian county was being monitored troughout two vegetation years from 1st of March to August 31. 2011. and from 27th of February to August 31. 2012. Monitoring of the population was conducted with the pheromone trap, while Tutasan trap and Ferolite trap were used for mass trapping and for preventive protection. Catches of adult males were examined twice a week, and pheromone was replaced approximately every five weeks. Mass trapping with the Ferolite trap has shown up to six times better results than the Tutasan trap. Mass trapping methods are successful for keeping the T.absoluta population under control only if it is low, but in case of a high population mass trapping methods must be combined along with the other protection methods.
