Abstract

Adaptation of loanwords from French at the semantic level comprises various changes of meaning that occur in the process of linguistic borrowing. The analysis, carried out on the basis of primary and secondary adaptation, is confined to direct borrowings and pseudo-loanwords as well since they undergo the same process of adaptation as direct borrowings. Three types of semantic changes have been analyzed in this paper. In contrasting Gallicisms in Croatian with their French counterparts, significant changes of meaning have been established.
