Abstract

The authors have analyzed handwritten notes in the margins of the copy of Modly's Automobile and Motorcycle Dictionary, published in 1970 in Zagreb, which belonged to Vlatko Dabac. It is a dictionary in five languages: Croatian-German-French-English-Italian written for tourists who don't know any Croatian. The authors have been inspired by Dabac's love and care for the Croatian language in times which didn't favor the expression of such feelings, to conduct an analysis of Dabac's handwritten suggestions of Croatian terms by which he replaced Serbian terms.
They conclude that suggested terms confirm with the norm of the Croatian Language Standard. The analysis is conducted on the orthographic, word-formation, syntactic, and lexical level.
